I've always been fascinated with genetics, and James and I have quite a mixture of genes. I'm definitely no scientist, but I do remember from the chapter on genetics in biology that there's a little graph with quarters/percentages on what our offspring will look like. (Does that make you proud, Bobbie? :) Now I know James' dark hair and brown eyes are dominant, and my light hair and green eyes are recessive. But if you look at the alleles (is that the right word?) that we both contributed, she could really look any number of ways. I would have either contributed a green or blue eye color, James a brown or a green; I definitely only contributed a blonde/red color for hair, while James could have contributed either a brown or a red; and I contributed freckles and light skin while James either contributed darkish skin or light skin. It's fun to think of all the possibilities! Especially when we all know of exceptions to the dominant/recessive rule. For example, James' dad is dark with dark hair and eyes, and his mom has red hair and green eyes. Textbook genetics say all of the children would have dark hair and eyes. (right?) But only James had dark hair, his brother is a blend, and his sister has dark blonde hair and blue-green eyes. So really, anything is possible! And that's not even getting into whether or not she'll have curly or straight hair, be short or tall, have large or small eyes, etc.
I think it would be interesting if we had 3 kids, and each child looked completely different from each other, coloring-wise.

That's the one of the things I can't WAIT to see in Isaac... cept genetics for Anthony and I say he'll have dark curly hair and olive skin.
Take a look at my sis's blog (link on mine) Her kids are just what you said about the 3 with 3 different combos sandy blonde/bright blue/freckles, brunette/green/no freckles, and red/darkish grey/very fair (that will probably have freckles when she gets older)...
They are quite a combo!
Genetics are great... but they just prove how creative our Creator can get with his creations!
yeah, that's fun to think about - I think about it a lot... Adam's mom has dark hair and dark eyes... and adam's dad has blue eyes and Adam got blue... who knows! It will be fun to see :)
Exactly...you could like us...the four Baumgardner sisters. Look at us, Jacqui 4 foot tall, maybe 100 Ibs soaking wet, dark skin, dark brown thick hair and dark ayes. Me- Tristan, 5'7, 130 Ibs, light skin, blue eyes and straight thin hair. Jennifer with light skin and freckles, about 5'5, about 135-140 Ibs, brown curly coarse hair. And last but not least Katy with RED thick hair, blue eyes, about 5'9, about 145-150 Ibs, light skin, and freckles. Very differnt. But look at what you get with the same parental genes. Crazy. I think maybe Hazel will have medium brown hair (like Julie), blueish green eyes, with your body. Anyways love you girl. Take care. XOXOX
My mom is blonde, my dad has black hair and all three of us have brown. My mom has blue eyes, my dad brown. Jill has green, Laura has blue, and I have brown. What a fun game! It seems Micah's inherited the recessive gene for blue eyes from Terry. Although at 8 months, I guess they still have time to change! I bet Hazel's auburn! With green eyes. Yep. That's my official statement. And...7 lbs. 4 oz. 20 inches long.
I've actually hoped I have an auburn haired girl. I love that color. And I'm totally on board with the small-to-average size baby. Hazel are you listening?
Oh...I hope Micah's eyes stay blue. Mine were blue until I was about 3 or 4 years old, then they turned green. But I think that's highly unusual.
yes i am very proud of you for remembering! actually science has proven that blue eyes are the only recessive color. green and hazel are actually considered a shade of brown and therefore more dominant than blue.
