venturing out

Last Tuesday, Hazel went out in her stroller for the first time. We just went over to some friends' house for dinner, but I was nervous about what exactly to do if she woke up. I haven't quite gotten down the whole nursing in public thing just yet.
No need to worry - she slept through the whole thing. :)

Last weekend, Mom and I took Hazel for a short walk through the neighborhood. Several people stopped us along the way to ask about her. It's funny - men here wear pink too, so even though she was decked out in pink and flowers, everyone asked if she was a boy or a girl. I met some women who said it was good for us to be walking in the sun. Then I met another lady who gave my mother and me a stern lecture about the dangers of taking a baby out before she's 40 days old. She mentioned everything from her nose getting squished permanently from the Snugli, to me getting a cold forever. My mom and I aren't exactly known for holding in our opinions, so I think everyone who knows us would have been very proud of our silent nods and gracious smiles during the talk. After that though, I decided to hold off one more week on going to church for fear that my friends there would all lecture us some more.

But yesterday, Hazel accompanied me and my mom for her first 'public' outing. We went to a mall full of strangers in hopes that no one would say anything to us. Fortunately, they didn't. Hazel did so well! Here we are in the Mothercare store getting her Christmas present. Don't worry - she slept through it so her gift will still be a surprise. :)
And yesterday we also did a webcam with Pops. (to answer your question, Kelley, my mom did come by herself. Sadly, my dad didn't have enough vacation time to come, too) So here is Hazel's first photo with her Pops. Shocker - she's asleep again! :)

I'm really surprised that you were fussed at since your mom was with you. As long as my mom was with me no one ever said a word to me! I wish I could tell you that the "advice" gets better as Hazel gets older, but it doesn't! You'll be using that gracious smile and nod a lot from now on. : )

It's hard for me to hold my opinions in too, so I'm proud of you! Your mom is a fantastic looking mom, so maybe they didn't realize she was your mom???...or maybe you just met the Indian version of you guys and the lady couldn't keep her opinion to herself! HAHA!
Yay for Hazel being such a good baby!

first of all- anthony & sharon- you made me spit out my drink. To me, being Indian = not keeping your opinion to yourself. I think its in their Constitution.

I'm really impressed your mom flew all that way by herself! Props to your mom!

Hazel is sooooooo adorable. I can't wait til we get to meet her next year. When is that, by the way? Well, have fun with your mom being there, and keep taking lots of pics because I love seeing that little girl....even when she's crying! :) Love you guys!

Emily,

I have now read all of your posts. I think it's so exciting that you are starting a family in a different country! What an awesome experience! I wanted to say...Wow you look good! Hazel is adorable as well! Have a happy holiday! Remember when you and Sarah took Kackie and me to your house and we went to Spring??? That's when you really liked this guy and you wanted us to scope him out!!! I am so glad you stuck with him!

I wish that I was there instead of virtual. I just hope my virtual visit to the mall wasn't too expensive.

Congrats on getting out! I was also rather nervous about public nursing, but after three kids who cares? You look great!!!

Way to be brave by venturing out with a newborn. There's no custom in Texas about staying at home for 40 days with a newborn, but trust me...that's where I'll be!!

Secondly, sleeping babies=happy babies. See "The one where Emma cries" for further insights. :)

I am sure it's hard to have so many people telling you what to do and not do. I know that I would not take too kindly to that, way to be a trooper. And also, mothercare looks pretty great and i think that hazel is so cute sleeping all the time!
